Budget-Friendly Tirana Travel Guide
Albania has a special place in my heart. It was my very first international trip and I had so many unforgettable experiences during my time there. In particular, Tirana stands out as one of the most impressive cities I’ve ever visited. In this post, I’m going to share with you an amazing budget travel guide to this beautiful city, packed with tips and recommendations for an unforgettable experience without breaking the bank.

Where is Albania Located?

Transportation to the City Center from Tirana Airport
From Tirana airport, you can take a taxi to the city center for a fixed price of 23 euros. If you prefer to take a bus, I recommend Luna Travel, which offers a comfortable ride with fast Wi-Fi. The trip takes about 30 minutes and costs 400 LEK (3.78 Euro) per person, with the final stop at Skanderbeg Square. You can also easily reach other destinations from the airport.

- Check for exact prices before visiting.

Take the cable car to Dajti Mountain!
Taking the cable car up Dajti Mountain is a somewhat controversial budget option, but it’s definitely worth the money. The ride offers stunning views of the Balkans and Albania’s beautiful countryside. The cable car costs around 1400 LEK (about $15) and the ride up takes about 15 minutes each way. It goes quite high, so it’s not for the faint-hearted! At the top you’ll find mini-golf, restaurants and parks, with a great view from the Ballkoni restaurant, which serves everything from traditional dishes to pizza and chips.

To get to the cable car from the centre of Tirana, you can take bus 11 or bus 13.
Visit Orthodox Autocephalous Church of Albania!
The Orthodox Autocephalous Church of Albania is an impressive cathedral located in the heart of Tirana, next to a large park. It’s fascinating to see a representation of this unique branch of Christianity. The third largest cathedral in the Balkans, it boasts a 32.2 metre dome and stunning frescoes on its walls. Situated opposite the former secret police museum, it offers a fascinating blend of history and architecture.

Bunk'Art 2 Really Worth Seeing
Bunk’Art Tirana offers a fascinating glimpse into Albania’s communist past with detailed exhibits on Enver Hoxha’s regime. Bunk’Art tickets reasonably priced at 500 LEK (about €5). The bunk’art 2 opening hours from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm, making it easy to visit during your day in Tirana.

Take in the Views from the Pyramid of Tirana!
The Pyramid of Tirana is a great place to get a high view of the city. From here you can enjoy a breathtaking view of Tirana’s modern skyline and historical landmarks. The panoramic view from the top is breathtaking. If you’re new to Tirana or want to get a closer look at the city, this is definitely a must-see. You’ll also find art events and cultural activities taking place inside the Pyramid of Tirana, making it a hub of creativity and local culture.

Relax in the Parks of Tirana
If you go to Tirana, you will notice that people spend a lot of time in parks and cafes. You can sit on a bench like one of the people of Tirana and watch what is happening in the city. This activity can be good for you mentally.

Hike Up Mount Gamti!
Hiking Gamti Mountain from Tirana is an affordable and unforgettable experience. This 4-5 hour trek offers the chance to discover stunning natural landscapes and take in breathtaking views along the way. The beauty of nature and peaceful surroundings will leave you in awe, making it the perfect adventure for those seeking both excitement and tranquillity. It’s also a great investment in your mental and physical wellbeing.
Gamti Mountain hike difficulty : Moderate level
Duration: 4-5 hours
Preparation: Water, snacks, comfortable shoes
The roads to Mount Gamti can be a bit rough and confusing, so if you plan to hike, make sure you do your research first. There are also local guides who offer tours of the mountain. If hiking isn’t your thing, you can easily catch a minibus from Skanderbeg Square that will take you there.

Watch the Sunset at Grand Park (Parku i Madh)
Tirana’s Grand Park (Parku i Madh) is one of the city’s hidden gems and a must visit for anyone looking to escape the hustle and bustle. I spent some time exploring the park and it was the perfect place to relax. The natural beauty, the lake and the peaceful walks make it a great place to unwind and enjoy some quiet time. Whether you’re strolling around or just sitting by the water, the park has a tranquil atmosphere. It’s a perfect break from the city and a great way to experience nature in the heart of Tirana!

Visit Toptani Shopping Mall!

Try Albanian Flavours!
In Albania, pastries are a big part of the food culture, and one of the most popular dishes is Byrek. You’ll find a byrek shop on almost every corner. However, my personal favorite was this one. If you’re visiting Albania and want to explore the must-try flavors, check out my article for some great recommendations. Albanian cuisine offers a variety of delicious dishes to satisfy every taste! I also recommend Albania Souvlaki as facefood.

Take a Walk Around the Blloku Neighborhood!

Discover Tirana's Local Markets!
Walking through the streets of Tirana, one of the most enjoyable ways to explore the city is to stop at the small local markets set up in the back streets and narrow alleys. Here you can not only shop, but also observe the daily life of Tirana. Take the opportunity to chat with the locals at the markets and experience firsthand how warm and friendly the Albanian people are. It’s a great way to connect with the culture and community.

I was absolutely amazed by the stunning nature of Albania and the warm Balkan people. A big thank you to all of them! Albania is definitely a country that should be on your bucket list. I look forward to more adventures and hope to visit again soon!
